1. The Mercurial Man

My latest composition for symphony orchestra, written in 2023. Like Fantasy Romantique, it is a symphonic poem rather than a multi-movement work, with various themes that appear throughout the work, with theme fragments developed in the style of traditional symphonic works.

“The Mercurial Man”

This MIDI recording was made with Finale software and The Garritan Orchestra library, mixed in Digital Performer.

2. Fantasy Romantique

My first symphonic poem written in the early 1990's. This piece is intended to capture the spirit of the late 19th and early 20th Century orchestral pieces of this kind, even alluding to the mid-Eastern sounds that Romantic composers were so fond of (themes played oboe and English horn in particular.

“Fantasy Romantique”

Scored in Finale; MIDI recording with Garritan Orchestra samples, mixed in Digital Performer.

5. Fanfare Prelude

This piece, published in 2007, is scored for brass septet. It is the only one of my published works still in print. The piece is purely Baroque style (no "Neo" at all) and could have easily been written in 1756 or earlier, two hundred years before my birth. It was published with a dedication to my friend and piano teacher, Jill Reely Lee.

“Fanfare Prelude”

Scored in Finale, this MIDI recording uses samples from various brass libraries.

6. I Shall Go Back

The first of two poems by Edna St. Vincent Millay set to music. The oboe and English horn are played by Haley Willis; the songs are sung by Jessica V. Hall.

7. What Lips My Lips My Lips Have Kissed

The second of two poems by St. Vincent Millay set to music. I first read these poems when I was in the eighth grade -they obviously made an impression!

8. Supplication

An improvisational composition that I later scored for oboe and orchestra. One of the best compliments I have ever received was from Dr. David Lowry who, after hearing this posted to Facebook asked if I minded if he scored it for organ. Of course, I told him that would be awesome. He sent me the score in his last few months of life.

9. Intermezzo for Flute, Harp and Strings

A somewhat Impressionistic piece; the middle returns to my lyrical Romantic style.

10. Winter Love

Written originally while I was at East Carolina University, this was my first published composition (1989). This recording, made for the publisher at Reflection Studios in Charlotte, NC, features the Winthrop Chorale under the direction of Dr. Bob Edgerton. The MIDI recording of the string quintet and harp was made at Steve Galloway's studio near Spartanburg, SC. The Winthrop Chorale took this piece on tour in 1990. The piece was also performed at Texas All State, Miami Dade All County, and numerous other large gatherings of choristers. A performance in London took place, but I do not know the venue nor anything about the performers. Most often performed in the flute/piano version, it stayed in print for about 15 years, and I have the only remaining printed copies.

“Winter Love”.

11. Mary at the Cross

My second published work (1990) was written for solo soprano and orchestra. This performance is beautifully sung by Jessica V. Hall, and I did the MIDI orchestra with Garritan Orchestra in Digital Performer.
